Katalin Vargha is a senior research fellow at the Department of Folklore Studies of the Institute of Ethnology of the HUN-REN Research Centre for the Humanities. In her research, she is engaged in the collection and comparative analysis of historical and contemporary texts of short folklore forms. One of her main research topics is the compilation of a historical corpus of Hungarian riddles and the related exploration of the changes in the genre. Among the contemporary phenomena, she is interested in the folkloristic research of internet memes as well as the genre-specific and theoretical issues that arise in this context. These include the exploration of the possibilities for archiving and metadata management of Internet memes.

Last year, within the frames of Anna Szakál's Ambassador project, a contemporary folklore collection of Katalin Vargha's was already introduced into the ARP Repository. In 2024, Katalin collaborates with Anna Szakál on other collections of contemporary folklore texts archived and referenced in the framework of the MTA Estonian-Hungarian bilateral project entitled Global and local elements in contemporary folklore in Hungary and Estonia, led by Katalin Vargha. They also work on the development of an ethnographic metadata scheme.
