ARP PID Policy

Registration

ARP uses the B2Handle service to assign persistent identifiers (PIDs) to reposited items. The Handle PID is assigned to the dataset when created, and registered when the dataset is first published. In addition, a PID to each file in the dataset is registered as well. The handle PIDs have the following form: hdl:21.15109/ARP/LOCAL-ID. the full URL for handle resolution is always displayed on the landing page of each file and dataset.

In addition, authors may request a DataCite DOI registration for their dataset in an email to support at researchdata.hu. These requests can only be fulfilled to the quota purchased by the Hungarian Research Network.

Maintenance

The ARP support team takes the responsibility of managing the PIDs registered for the ARP repository content. They take care of keeping the registered URLs alive and their metadata up-to-date.

There is no way to delete or change an already registered PID. We cannot provide direct access for users to editing PID metadata either. Metadata is kept up-to-date by the ARP repository software and the administrator team so that PID metadata be identical to the metadata present in the repository.

Datasets cannot be deleted, but deaccessioned. Deaccessioned datasets remain visible in the repository and their PIDs remain active, however the dataset content will be inaccessible.

Versioning

The ARP repository provides version numbers automatically for datasets. The owners can select between minor and major version jumps (e.g. from 1.0 to 1.1 or 2.0). However, in both cases the PID for the dataset remains unchanged. Thus, one dataset will always have a single PID in the ARP repository.

Metadata

The B2Handle system does not store any additional metadata for items, just its real URL. The ARP repository software (based on Harvard Dataverse) automatically performs necessary management actions for old or obsolete PID metadata.

However, the registration of DOIs is a manual process, therefore the timely update of metadata changes at the DOI Provider is not guaranteed by ARP.

Costs

The ARP repository registers PIDs at no cost for the authors. However, DOI registration requests can be fulfilled to the extent of our yearly quota.

Certification

The ARP repository aims to become a certified data repository. We are in contact with the Repository Certification Committee of the Hungarian Science Bibliography. As soon as they will have their certification criteria ready, we will apply for a certification.
