On June 10, 2026, the Hungarian data steward community held its tenth, jubilee data steward meeting. For this celebratory event, we were guests at the Benczúr Street building of one of the organizing institutions, the ELTE Research Centre for Linguistics. The ELTE National Laboratory for Digital Heritage (ELTE DH-LAB) and the HUN-REN Data Repository Platform (HUN-REN ARP) also participated in organizing the event. The event was moderated by Ákos Lencsés (ELTE NYTK) and Zsuzsa Sidó (ELTE DH-LAB).
We began the event with an “icebreaker” - a casual round of sharing experiences - during which participants could talk about the difficulties, challenges, and problems they are currently facing in their work and within their institutional environments. These informal accounts spark an interested and supportive exchange of ideas, which in and of itself can help alleviate the sense of difficulty felt by those present. In addition, they serve the purpose of allowing first-time attendees to - at the least - become familiar with the speakers’ institutional backgrounds and contexts, as well as to gain insight into their experiences and the knowledge they have accumulated in overcoming challenges.
Following the opening session, there were questions and discussions related to data management and the use of data repositories. Participants in these meetings always come from a wide variety of institutional and educational backgrounds and bring diverse experiences to the table - ranging from data stewards working in astronomy to the organizer of ELTE’s accredited data steward training program - so the number of possible topics and contexts is virtually endless.
Afterwards, participants had the opportunity to take a look inside the NYTK Sign Language Laboratory, where Zoltán Tarr (ELTE NYTK) gave an engaging presentation to those in attendance.
To celebrate our 10th gathering, we wrapped up the event with a jubilee cake - in the spirit of fostering flexibility, which is considered so important in our profession, participants could choose from two different cakes.
The aim of the Data Steward Meeting series is to provide an opportunity for Hungarian data stewards to meet informally, talk, get to know each other, and discuss the latest news, events, trends, and issues in the field. The series, which brings together Hungarian data stewards is open to anyone interested. The next event is expected to take place in the autumn of 2026. For the exact date and location, please contact @email. The organizers look forward to seeing all interested data stewards at future events!
